Red Light Cameras, School Zone Cameras, and Traffic Cameras in Aventura, FL: What's Actually Active

If you're trying to figure out what evidence exists after an Aventura car accident — it helps to know that Aventura's camera enforcement looks very different from other South Florida cities. Unlike Hollywood, which shut its red-light camera program down years ago, Aventura's Intersection Safety Camera Program is still fully active today, and Aventura is the reason the whole legal fight over these programs in Florida ended the way it did.
FDOT/FL511 Traffic Cameras Near Aventura
It is important to distinguish state traffic-monitoring cameras from enforcement cameras. FDOT operates publicly viewable FL511 traffic cameras along corridors near Aventura, including:
Biscayne Boulevard (US-1)
William Lehman Causeway (SR-856), connecting Aventura to Sunny Isles Beach
I-95, along Aventura's western edge
Critical distinction: FL511 explicitly states that its displayed video and images are neither stored nor recorded. The existence of an FL511 camera near a crash does not mean archived footage exists — these are live-view-only feeds for traffic monitoring, not enforcement or evidence-gathering tools.

A crash near an intersection with only an FL511 monitoring camera: likely nothing to request — these feeds aren't archived

An incident on a state road (Biscayne Blvd, I-95, William Lehman Causeway): contact FDOT District 6 (which covers Miami-Dade County) for any separately preserved incident records, since the live FL511 feed itself isn't archived
Aventura's Red-Light Cameras Are Active — And Legally Significant
Aventura's Intersection Safety Camera Program uses cameras (vendor: Verra Mobility, formerly American Traffic Solutions) to photograph and cite drivers who run red lights.

West Country Club Drive at NE 199th Street (Aventura Boulevard) — northbound and southbound
NE 199th Street (Aventura Boulevard) at West Country Club Drive — eastbound
West Country Club Drive at William Lehman Causeway — north and westbound
NE 199th Street (Aventura Boulevard) at Biscayne Boulevard — west, north, and southbound
NE 191st Street at Biscayne Boulevard — west and southbound
Biscayne Boulevard at Miami Gardens Drive — northbound
Current Controversy: Budget and Fairness Concerns
A February 2025 WLRN investigative report found that red-light camera revenue makes up roughly 5% of Aventura's city budget — one of the highest percentages of any city budget in South Florida — with the city projecting a 17% revenue increase in the current fiscal year. Residents have specifically raised concerns about the Biscayne Boulevard/NE 199th Street intersection for right turns they consider legal, and have asked the city to review enforcement patterns there.
School Zone Speed Cameras: Also Active
Separate from red-light enforcement, Aventura also runs a School Zone Camera Safety Program, authorized by House Bill 657 (signed by Governor DeSantis, May 31, 2023) — the same law behind Hollywood's school-zone program.
Implemented for the 2024–2025 school year and continuing forward
Triggers at more than 10 mph over the posted limit
Active for the entire school day session, not just arrival/dismissal
Aventura residents' children generally attend Miami-Dade County Public Schools and city-run charter schools, including Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES), Don Soffer Aventura Charter High School, Aventura Waterways K-8 Center, Highland Oaks Middle School, and Ojus Elementary.
